I love cover letters. I can't say I've ever needed an artist in the same manner you do, though. In that situation I can see where a portfolio is more important than a cover letter or resume.

I'm currently looking for a programmer experienced in Adobe Flex and Adobe Coldfusion. Am I going to respond to the person who sent a me a word doc resume with no cover letter? Or the person who sent me a cover letter?

I'm going to follow up with the person who sent me a cover letter, because they addressed many of the things I requested in the job post, such as "Please send along resume, rates, and relevant experience."

For all I know the person who just simply sent a word doc was a spammer.
